you ever questioned to yourself why these posts are getting so much traffic? Well answer is you have done something right.

The reason is some of the posts got ranked on the first page of the search engine for the keywords that are highly searched by users.

Who is the one who is ranking your content?

At the end of day its the machine algorithm which looks for the certain signals in order to rank content appropriately.

When ever I say ranking of a content what do I mean? In this context ranking is a order from which pages appear in the search engines results page SERP.

You can go to SEMrush site and type in websites address to see the keywords you are ranking for.

This is specific phrase which are driving traffic to specific URL. When doing SEO this is phrase that we target so we will often call it target keyword.

This is ranking of a keyword in Google Search i.e. position. For instance if its no 1 its a first result that Google shows. If its no 4 its a fourth. And so on. Your target have to rank on a first page of the Google for your target keyword (Pos. 1-10).

This will tell you roughly how many people are searching for a particular keyword in the given month. This is very important thing because even if you think the search term will be popular Googles data will tell you otherwise. In above example you can see the two similar keywords which have considerable difference in a monthly search volume:
Free professional email address: 120 searches/month
Free professional email: 80 searches/month
Look at the two more important terms

Short Tail Keywords: Short keywords are 1-3 words.
Lose weight, Professional email, Make Money Online
Long Tail Keywords: More specific keywords are usually three words or longer.
How to lose belly fat in 6 weeks, How to get professional email from Google, How To Make Money Blogging

Note: All the words and phrases qualify as keywords when they have considerable amount of the searches (volume) in the month.

Long tail keywords is more profitable and you will drive more targeted traffic and your chances of the ranking on a first page is higher.

What is importance of keywords from a SEO perspective?

When we will SEO optimize a blog post or the web page we have a option to define our targeted keywords. And this kind of keywords is known as a Meta keyword.

In 2012 it was very important to specify meta keywords but in 2017 its not of any use. The search engine algorithms had become much smarter now they auto detect keywords and rank the pages automatically.

Google has already made it clear they do not consider meta keywords when they are selecting keywords and this will make sense because it wouldnt be gud for anyone.

example for this post some meta keywords could be: keyword research, SEO, keyword tips and so on.

Now if anyone looking for keyword tips they would land on this page not get anything of use and leave this will increase my bounce rate. Its not good for me and its not good for a user.

Keywords Density and Keywords Placements

This Wiki article will give you the fair idea of the how keyword density is calculated. Depending on the your targeted keywords long tail or short tail you have to try to maintain the general percentage of the keyword density. When bots will crawl your page they will determine which are the particular keywords a page should rank for from keyword density.

Keyword targeting is most important, but stay away from the keyword stuffing. This is a overuse of the keywords on a particular page. This will be ultimately harmful to your ranking.

Different SEO ninjas have different idea about the keyword density but the main keyword should ideally not be more than 2% of a article. I always try to keep  between 1-1.5%

Along with a main keyword  you should also throw the some related terms, known as LSI keywords.

Do remember that  you can target more than the one keyword on a blog post or the page. But I will suggest you to keep it less than the three because if your post is a high quality you can also indirectly rank for the related long tail keywords.

What does the keyword stuffing do?

Overusing keywords alerts the Google bots to a fact that you are spamming  the post by stuffing it with a unnecessary keywords. Google will think you are trying to trick  system. Google penalises for this action.

Be wise when you will select the number of keywords you are going to use for SEO. Particularly since  Google Panda updates (2011) any of  SEO actions that  not appear to be natural are bad for the site.

meta descriptions, meta titles and headings:

Now that you have the perfect keyword to target  and you are going to write a great post around it try also to use that keyword as a part of the title of the post. By the default  this title will also be the title which will be shown in search engines i.e. the “meta title”.

You can also write the description for the users to see when they will look at your site in the search engine i.e. the “meta description”. Adding in the relevant meta description will  give more insight about your page or post to search engine bots. I will suggest you to use your keyword in a meta description as well.

Note: You can write meta descriptions and meta titles  using a SEO plugin like Yoast SEO.

And also try to write more SEO friendly articles by using a H2 and H3 tags your title is H1 by the default in WordPress. However dont overuse heading tags as the keyword stuffed headings. And too many heading tags that can lead to negative ranking.
